On and Offsite Workshops

There’s an interesting line up of workshops to add to your Aotearoa NZ Anaesthesia ASM 2024 experience.

Wednesday, 6 November

Gastric Ultrasound: A four-hour hands-on workshop will equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to use gastric ultrasound in your clinical practice. The workshop will include multiple scanning sessions in different gastric states, image interpretation teaching, formative assessments, and a comprehensive handbook. An optional post-workshop mentoring facility will be available to support your learning.

CPD Workshops: Ensure you keep up to date with your annual CPD requirements – Anaphylaxis, ACLS (including a special paediatric-focused session) and CICO (Emergency Neck Rescue) and Malignant Hyperthermia all available.

Offsite Workshops – The are three unique offsite workshops if you’re looking for something a little different. Head out to the Air New Zealand Simulation Lab, to be immersed in the cabin crew training world. We will discuss how medical situations are managed onboard, and what equipment and training is available to the crew. We will also cover other aspects of the crew training like survival, aviation medicine and demonstrate some of the emergency procedures.

Ferry over to Devonport Naval Base and enjoy a guided tour of the hyperbaric oxygen therapy and treatment unit inside and out, and learn what work takes place here, finishing with an informal question and answer session.

Calling all PIRATES!! (Pre-Hospital Initial Response And Treatment Education). Join us at Ardmore Airport for a full day session, including lunch, to help prepare you to respond as a doctor at the scene of any disaster you come across in your day-to-day life. Run by the doctors and paramedics of the Auckland Rescue Helicopter, it will teach you scene safety, initial life-saving treatments and how to cut the door off a car. Not to be missed, plus all fees will be donated to HEMZ!

Thursday 7 - Saturday 9 November

There will also be a range of concurrent workshops during the ASM from 7 – 9 November. Including regional anaesthesia hands-on workshops offered on themes of the trunk, lower and upper limb. Led by keynote speaker Professor Ki Jinn Chin (upper limb) and a host of local and international experts. These courses offer a comprehensive range of updates and tips and tricks for everyday use.

Additional ultrasound sessions are available on topics of Cardiac POCUS and imaging of the spine in clinical practice. As well as lecture and case-based workshops on boosting resilience, effective communications and financial literacy.

Anaesthetic Technician registration includes the Anaesthetic Technician workshop rotation. This runs concurrently with Thursday’s programme and features an introduction to laparoscopic skills, an Optiflow THRIVE workshop, and the basics of fracture fixation.

Workshop spaces are limited, and bookings are first-in, first-served. Workshops are not included in your ASM registration fee and are an additional cost. Add your workshop selection to your in-person Aotearoa NZ Anaesthesia ASM registration.
